QUINCY (AP) - The local Crime Stoppers affiliate shut itself down
after the identity of one of its tipsters was given to a defense
attorney.
"No longer can we guard the anonymity of the caller. When that is
gone, Crime Stoppers is gone," said retired judge Richard W. Carter,
executive director and general counsel for Crime Stoppers
International.
The Crime Stoppers program lets people call a hot line and
anonymously give information about a crime to law-enforcement
agencies. The program, which is in its 26th year, has affiliates in
13 countries, including more than 1,000 in the United States, Carter
said.
