Article: Crime Stoppers affiliate shuts down; Quincy: Caller's identity is revealed to an attorney

QUINCY (AP) - The local Crime Stoppers affiliate shut itself down after the identity of one of its tipsters was given to a defense attorney.

"No longer can we guard the anonymity of the caller. When that is gone, Crime Stoppers is gone," said retired judge Richard W. Carter, executive director and general counsel for Crime Stoppers International.

The Crime Stoppers program lets people call a hot line and anonymously give information about a crime to law-enforcement agencies. The program, which is in its 26th year, has affiliates in 13 countries, including more than 1,000 in the United States, Carter said.
