DAVENPORT (AP) - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said it will
resume a navigation study that damaged its reputation after a
whistleblower accused the Corps of manipulating figures.
The refocused study of the Upper Mississippi River and Illinois
Waterway System will be modified to emphasize environmentally
sustainable use of the river, officials said Friday.
An interim report is expected next summer.
Navigation industry representatives said they are pleased that
the study, mired in controversy and now in its eighth year, will
continue.
Environmentalists were skeptical, but also willing to try to
reach consensus on exactly what "environmentally sustainable" means.
