MOSCOW (AP) - Russia has a huge advantage over China in nuclear
missiles and territory, but it is in many ways the poorer nation as
the two countries cement a "strategic partnership" during Chinese
leader Jiang Zemin's visit this week.
Jiang will sign a new friendship treaty with Russia - their first
major treaty since the Soviet collapse 10 years ago - during his
four-day visit, which begins today.
Both countries want good relations to counter what they consider
American hegemonism and plans for a national missile-defense system,
as well as to strengthen their economies and mount successful bids
to join the World Trade Organization.
