EAST DUBUQUE, Ill. - It's not easy to find, but it's worth the
effort. Wesley United Methodist Church is a unique congregation in
many respects.
The congregation is one of the oldest in the area, having been
started to serve the first settlers who moved to the fledgling
Dunleith (now East Dubuque) community in 1832. Two circuit rider
preachers led monthly worship services in log cabins. The first
organized Methodist Episcopal brick church dates from 1870. Over the
years, it and an accompanying parsonage were expanded.
Nearly 150 years after the congregation began, a new, modern
church was built on rolling, timbered land north of Dunleith Park,
