THE George Foster estate collection of clocks auctioned by Webb's
on May 24 attracted considerable interest. Among the highlights: A
Gothic chamber clock by John Were dated 1567 achieved the top price
of the day, $20,000.
Also achieving good prices were a George III Japanned bracket
clock, circa 1725, by John Parkes, $10,000; a marine chronometer
mounted on gimbals in a triple layer mahogany box by Barrauds,
Cornhill, London, circa 1809, $18,000; a marine chronometer on
sprung
gimbal mounts, by Simon Vissiere, circa 1850, $15,000; a mantle
clock
with red marble plinthe by Vulliamy, London, circa 1810-20, $12,000.
There were also plenty of cheaper items to tempt collectors, with
the cheapest ...
