THERE is concern in rugby circles that New Zealand rugby is
fostering talented players who have no intention of continuing to
play the game in this country.
The problem was highlighted last week when a Western Samoan
player
turned out for NZ Secondary Schools against Wales.
The player, funded by a rugby scholarship arranged by Manu Samoa
Rugby Limited and the Western Samoa Rugby Union, has been clearly
earmarked as one of his country's prospects.
Manu Samoa Rugby Limited's spokesman Andrew Gaze said while the
organisation did not have written contracts with the 12 players in
NZ
on scholarships, "there's a moral situation in place".
Gaze declined to reveal how much each student gets.
