Barry Bonds hit the 660th home run Monday afternoon, a signal
flare of a shot that cleared the 25-foot brick wall in right field by
a significant margin and splashed down amid a scrum of windsurfers
and kayakers in San Francisco Bay.
Bonds clapped his hands once and chugged purposefully around the
bases, stepped on home plate and raised his arms to the heavens. Then
out of the dugout limped his 72-year-old godfather, Willie Mays,
wearing a blue sportcoat over a tan golf shirt and carrying, of all
things, an Olympic torch, which he handed over to Bonds.
"It was like a weight was just lifted off my shoulder," Bonds said
