KATYA KAHANOVA is an opera with an extraordinary power to
communicate. But opera, more than any art form, depends on other
creators for its success.
In Gale Edwards' production for the New Zealand International
Festival of the Arts in Wellington, singers, orchestra and the
production team give Janacek's work a performance of inspired and
unified integrity.
Peter Davison's simple, effective set portraying the Volga and
ominously looming storm, and Giles Cadle's costumes in subtle
variations of black and grey are all thrown into brittle clarity by
Mark McCullough's lighting.
Edwards draws all together with clinical precision, pointing the
character's motives while they struggle within ...
