I became interested in working in mental health because my mother
suffered from schizophrenia. I also had an urge to help people, if
that doesn't sound too crude.
Since qualifying as a social worker in the late Sixties, most of
my work has involved rehabilitating people with mental health
problems out of long-stay hospitals and into the community - whether
that's in their own homes, in groups or back with their families.
It's extremely satisfying.
A lot of my clients live on their own and don't have families or
