A BRITISH band whose quiet philosophical aim in life could be to
make the likes of Metallica seem like Abba is on its way to New
Zealand for the first time in its 10-year career to play a one-off
concert in Auckland.
They are Napalm Death, who emerged from the industrial wasteland
of Birmingham with a musical vision that swiftly took the ancient
concept of hard rock to nerve-wrenching new extremes.
In the pantheon of loud electric music, old habits like metal,
heavy metal, hardcore and even death metal take on almost folksy hues
alongside Napalm Death and their mutant "grindcore" brand of
bonecrushing noise -- first unleashed by the then three-piece band on
their debut album, Scum.
