Article: Merged banks to have most teller machines

THE combined Westpac-Trust Bank group will be the biggest owner of electronic banking, or automatic teller machines, when the banks merge in about six weeks.

It will own and operate 451 machines, compared with 136 owned by the Bank of New Zealand.

However, Godfrey Boyce, of KPMG, the accountancy firm that last week released the 1996 bank performance statistics, said customers of the BNZ would still have greater access to teller machines.

"The BNZ has worked flat out establishing relationships with rival banks, which allows its customers to use their machines," he said.
