``Achtung Fahrrad!'' -- ``Watch out, cyclist!'' This is the
warning pedestrians hear if they are foolhardy enough to stray onto
a
cycle lane in Germany.
Often it will be accompanied by a furious jingling of a bicycle
bell. Mind where you go, if you want to avoid being mown down by a
Teutonic terror on two wheels.
Not all cyclists go hell-for-leather, but cycle lanes are taken
very seriously. Germany is one of the most cycle-friendly countries
in the world. It has more than a few lessons for Christchurch.
Part of this is a legacy of urban design following World War 2,
when German cities were destroyed. Rebuilding included new wider
