The World Court's steps towards judging whether nuclear weapons are illegal ranged over a variety of issues. STUART McMILLAN cites some of the court's opinions.

The baldness of the main finding in the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice - that the threat or use of nuclear weapons would generally be contrary to the rules of international law, and that the court could not conclude definitively whether the threat or use of nuclear weapons would be lawful or unlawful in an extreme circumstance of self-defence -- does nothing to convey the complexity of the full advisory opinion, which runs to 35 pages of small type.
