Article: Meths use likely killer, says coroner

Two chronic alcoholics who were initially thought to have been drinking methanol before they died in May this year, were more likely to have consumed large quantities of methylated spirits, Christchurch Coroner Richard McElrea was told yesterday.

Maude Woodhead, also known as Maude Watene, 45, who had recently moved to Christchurch from Auckland, and Cyril Douglas Bain, 38, died on May 1 and May 2 respectively, at Christchurch Hospital.

The two were described as chronic alcoholics who frequently drank methylated spirits, and commonly drank with other alcoholics in Latimer Square.
