Article: New Zealand looks east

The New Zealand Government's push into Latin America is justified on trade potential alone. The region has 401 million people and the total gross domestic product amounts to $US1300 billion. The push is also towards the Caribbean, where the population is 36m and the combined GDP $US65b. By themselves these measures of population and wealth might not justify such a concerted effort but the region has changed dramatically both politically and economically and is opening itself up for trade regionally and to the rest of the world.
