Article: Dogs' blood-crazed attacks on sheep a nightmare for farmers

Pet owners who allow their dogs to run loose are a nightmare for sheep farmers, writes DIANNA LESLIE. She talks to farmers whose stock has been mauled by stray dogs.

People who let their dogs roam unsupervised are encouraging killers, say farmers and authorities.

Last week in Waikari, North Canterbury, dogs mauled and killed a stud ram that had earned its owners more than $70,000. They also killed 13 stud corriedale ewes, which were all in-lamb with twins.

Nine mutilated sheep are still recovering. The survivors needed veterinary care and antibiotics. The dogs are still at large.

Authorities and farmers agree that dogs which maul and kill sheep do not hunt alone, and they always kill again.
