Article: Mountain bike surprises in contest against top racer

The greatest revolution in cycling since 1980 has been the mountain bike. For many people the more upright riding position, better brakes, and strong tyres are more appealing than a standard bike, but you often hear disparaging comments about how slow mountain bikes are by comparison.

They do not feel slow to me. A mountain bike in good condition feels quite nimble.

I thought it would be interesting to find out how different an average mountain bike was from a good racing bike. To do this I decided to see how fast I could ride each around a course, and compare the times. The test was rather handicapped against the mountain bike.
