The greatest revolution in cycling since 1980 has been the
mountain bike. For many people the more upright riding position,
better brakes, and strong tyres are more appealing than a standard
bike, but you often hear disparaging comments about how slow
mountain
bikes are by comparison.
They do not feel slow to me. A mountain bike in good condition
feels quite nimble.
I thought it would be interesting to find out how different an
average mountain bike was from a good racing bike. To do this I
decided to see how fast I could ride each around a course, and
compare the times.
The test was rather handicapped against the mountain bike. The
racing bike was an aluminium Vitus 979, which weighs 9.5kg ...
