EVERY year cheese makers around the country pick their finest
cheeses and head for the annual independent New Zealand Cheese
Awards.
Here the judges examine, sniff and taste each cheese to find the
medal winners.
The range of cheeses extends from the freshest sheep cheeses to
very old edam, with every hard, soft and semi-soft cheese in
between.
This year, there were 382 cheeses, nine categories and 30 judges.
Peta Mathias was one of the judges - an honour, she says, because
she adores the "controlled spoilage" they call cheese.
Juliet Harbutt is a self-described "greedy cheese person".
She is fascinated by cheese because there are so many varieties
with diverse flavours and textures, ...
