OCEANIA can look forward to hosting the soccer's world cup finals
in the second decade of the new century, according to Fifa president
Sepp Blatter.
Blatter, in Auckland to open the Oceania football academy, said
he
favoured an African nation to host the 2006 World Cup but suggested
he would like to see Oceania stage the World Cup in 2014 -- with
Australia as the probable hosts.
Despite a plea by Fifa's Oceania delegate, Charlie Dempsey, that
the time had come for Oceania to be granted a direct route to the
World Cup, Blatter said Oceania's way to the 2002 finals was
unlikely
to be changed.
