WELLINGTON -- More elderly people will die in rest-homes if the
Government removes existing controls on them, Grey Power vice-
president Joan Clegg says.
She agreed with concerns expressed by NZ First MP Neil Kirton
that
changes proposed by the Health Ministry and the Treasury to
licensing
legislation would threaten the health and safety of rest-home
patients.
Mr Kirton, the former associate health minister who was dismissed
from that post last August, said at the weekend that the proposals
would remove controls on staff numbers and qualifications at rest-
homes. Mrs Clegg said many rest-homes were already under-staffed,
and to allow staff levels to drop further would inevitably lead to
