After years in decline, and with motorway wrangles, St Albans
shows signs of rejuvenation. MIKE CREAN talks to residents trying to
heal the wounds. Watch your step as you enter the St Albans Library
building in Colombo Street. The floor shakes, and holes show where
the borer have grown tired of holding hands. Plants grow out of the
spouting, and plaster crumbles from walls.
Like the suburb it served, the library has long been in decline.
It closed last year. The 130-year-old building lies empty.
It will not be empty for long. The building is to undergo a
renewal which St Albans residents hope will make it the symbol of a
rejuvenated suburb.
