Article: Fire Service warns of swindle

A man wanting sponsors for a fire-safety brochure is ripping people off, the Fire Service says.

The Regional Fire Safety Manager, Graeme Daikee, said a man using the Fire Service name had been falsely marketing a fire-safety brochure in the Sydenham and Merivale areas.

Two people contacted The Press yesterday, concerned that the man might be conning other people.

A photographer said the man had called her and said he was from the Fire Service Commission and had advertising space free in a brochure going to print.

He said he needed $200 and one of her photographs as soon as possible. She agreed as she had been the victim of a house fire 12 years ago.

She gave him a cheque and the photo, but ...
