Article: Maori Battalion commander Sir Charles Bennett, 85, dies

WELLINGTON -- Political and Maori tributes marked the death of one of New Zealand's most noted leaders, commander of the 28th Maori Battalion Sir Charles Bennett, DSO.

Sir Charles died in Tauranga yesterday after a long illness. He was 85.

A son of the first Maori bishop of Aotearoa, Bishop Fred Bennett, Sir Charles was brought up in the Rotorua area. He was educated at Te Aute College in Hawke's Bay, Canterbury University, and Oxford University, but spent his latter years living at Maketu, 25km south-east of Tauranga.
