IN THE humdrum Parisian suburb of Asnieres-sur-Seine, the street
sign for the short rue du Congres is crossed out in red paint. Above
it, a new sign reads "rue Louis Vuitton". It's a small tribute to the
most famous luggage brand in the world. For almost 120 years, all
Louis Vuitton products were made in the Asnieres workshop; next to it
stands a very grand mansion that was home to four generations of
Vuittons. The workshop is still in use, crafting the poplar wood
trunks that Louis Vuitton first designed in 1854. The Vuitton house
is a perfectly preserved museum-piece. Extravagant art nouveau
