For animals, the summer holidays are far from favourable. At this
time of year, many are particularly vulnerable. Just why has again
been set out by the Royal New Zealand Society for the Prevention of
Cruelty to Animals. It says some animals that were Christmas gifts
found themselves for a while the centre of attention. Now that their
novelty has worn off, they have been abandoned.
Cruelty to animals takes many forms. For example, the daft notion
that family pets can somehow fend for themselves while their owners
are away on holiday is all too widely held. Dogs and cats are left
to their own devices, sometimes for extended periods. Yet even if
someone comes in to feed it daily, a dog left ...
