Article: Lawyers cost Fire Service $3000 a day

The Fire Service has spent almost $3000 a day on legal advice and representation since Roger Estall was appointed chairman in August 1997.

Figures supplied to Labour MP Trevor Mallard by Internal Affairs Minister Jack Elder show that the commission spent $1.343 million dollars on legal advice between the time of Mr Estall's appointment and the end of March.

Mr Elder refused to break down the cost, but Mr Mallard said it was publicly known that there had been major expenditure on: failed Employment Court action, Mr Estall's representation by Wellington law firm Chen and Palmer at a parliamentary select committee inquiry, and separate advice for Mr Estall and his chief executive Jean Martin in ...
