Article: Trust helps Maoris to stop violence in home

A Christchurch trust is trying to change Maori attitudes to violent behaviour, particularly in the home.

He Waka Tapu, a stopping violence programme for Maori men, started in Christchurch in 1996 and has helped about 250 men in the last 18 months.

Trust co-ordinator Daryl Gregory said the programme provided alternative ways of working with Maori men and their whanau to address violence in the home.

He said the programme was started because Maoris were not joining existing programmes aimed at stopping violence.
