Police throughout the country are losing the battle against
organised crime, because they are hamstrung by a lack of funds, the
Police Association says.
"The legacy of this Government is going to be the era in which
organised crime got out of control," Police Association president
Greg O'Connor said yesterday.
On Tuesday, Canterbury police district commander Superintendent
John Reilly told city councillors that Christchurch's organised
crime was largely unchecked, because police did not have the
manpower to deal with it.
The city needed at least another 50 frontline police, if it was
to make serious inroads into crime, he said.
