The Police Association is defending pepper spray as a valuable
and safe police weapon, despite the death of an intellectually
disabled man after he was sprayed.
Russell Willie Hamilton, 32, went into a coma a few minutes after
being sprayed and restrained by police on Wednesday, and died on
Friday night in Waikato Hospital. His death is being investigated by
the Police Complaints Authority.
One of three police at the scene sprayed Mr Hamilton after he
smashed two windows at his IHC community trust house in the suburb
of Dinsdale.
Police Association president Greg O'Connor emphasised that it was
not yet known whether the spray had contributed to his death.
