An ingenious variable compression engine has just been announced by Saab. It could lead to fuel-efficient engines with high performance and low emissions, says DAVE MOORE.

After more than a decade of development, Swedish car company Saab has created the first variable-compression four-stroke engine, and it could be in production in the next generation of Saab cars.

Model-aircraft buffs will understand variable compression. Miniature diesel motors used in models have screw-adjustable cylinder heads which can have a dramatic effect on performance.

Small diesels used to have to be started on soft compression, and have the head screwed down for high-performance running.
