Tomorrow, it's my birthday. If I could demand what my heart most desires, I would ask for sleep. A vast, dribbly, great draught of it. Then, to wake up, blurry eyed, and spend another couple of hours among hot sheets in a glorious state of drifting semi-consciousness. That would be heaven itself.

I write this as a wild-eyed insomniac in possession of a two-year- old and a newborn baby. The baby is a nocturnal creature, comatose by day and manic by night. Before about 2.30am, she requires a vigorous workout of swinging and tummy-pressing, throughout which she must frantically suck a proffered finger.
