Christchurch's air pollution is contributing to deaths in
susceptible, elderly people at worse rates than the experts
predicted.
A national medical study has confirmed that suspended
particulates in the air, as well as high temperatures, are linked to
an increase in deaths of people over 65 years.
The findings have backed what the Canterbury Regional Council has
been saying for years -- that air pollution kills.
It has claimed in the past that the pollutants are linked to up
to 29 deaths a year and aggravated respiratory problems in other
residents.
