Violence in Maori families has been brutally portrayed on the big
screen in films such as Once Were Warriors, but one Christchurch
group is attempting to break the cycle. VICTORIA CLAUSEN reports.
T he fear in his child's eyes brings back a sudden, dark memory:
hiding outside so he would not incur the wrath of his own father as
he came home drunk from the pub.
He knew then it was time to get help.
The story is not an unusual one at the He Waka Tapu Trust. The
men look at their children and see themselves, their father, and the
continuing pattern of violence. They want to break that cycle.
