Article: WAITING LISTS ON INCREASE Health `broken promises' rap

FIGURES out today are expected to show a sharp rise in NHS waiting lists.

The Liberal Democrats have predicted that the increase in numbers of patients on waiting lists could be as much as 50,000.

Health spokesman Simon Hughes produced an estimate from the independent House of Commons library suggesting that the figure for last month could be up to 1,257,000 from 1,207,500 in September. The figures were released hard on the heels of exchanges in the Commons yesterday in which Liberal Democrat leader Paddy Ashdown claimed Labour was close to breaking its election pledge on waiting lists.
