Having never picked up a shotgun in my life, I wasn't quite sure
what I had let myself in for when I agreed to spend a weekend hunting
wild boar (or sanglier, as the French call it) at a lodge in the
heavily forested Loire Valley. Everyone I spoke to about it warned me
of the dangers of these beasts. "If you don't kill 'em dead, they
will turn on you Mr 'ix," said Gabby from the Italian deli, handing
me a chunk of wild- boar salami to try.
After an easy train journey from London to Tours via Lille, we
were met at St-Pierre-des-Corps station by Niels Bryan-Low, the
