PAUL Lawrie began his second round as Open champion today with words of praise from Colin Montgomerie ringing in his ears.

The 30-year-old from Aberdeen fired an opening 67, five under par, to share second place in the Smurfit European Open at the K Club, just one shot off the lead.

And it left Montgomerie, European number one for the last six years, shaking his head in disbelief that such a score was possible from his fellow Scot just 12 days after his Open victory at Carnoustie.
