`This is so cool," says Steve Bays with a boyish bashful grin,
"we're playing in London! Imagine!" The Canadian, a first-time
visitor to this land, surveys the sea of hardened sardine faces
jammed into the Barfly, mostly two-gigs-a-night industry types, and
the slight silliness of what he's said begins to dawn. "OK, I know
you guys live here, but... imagine!" It's a sweet little moment, but
it's also proof that the Anglophilia you think you can hear in Hot
Hot Heat's music is for real. Two weeks ago, I called Hot Hot Heat
"this year's Strokes", but they're much better than that.
Their music is far more versatile, a blend of English new wave and
American punk-funk (England + America = ...
