The unusual decor has become popular after star designers like Carol Smillie on shows such as Changing Rooms and Better Homes plumped for it instead of paint or wallpaper.

However, firefighters are concerned people could be putting their homes at risk of fire if the fabric hangs too close to light fittings.

They are warning do-it-yourself decorators to take proper precautions when using fabrics that may not be flame-retardant.
