SIXTH-FORMERS are now having to work an average 50-hour week as a
result of the Government's drive to broaden the number of subjects
they study before taking A-levels, head teachers have revealed.
The new sixth form curriculum, under which students do an average
of four subjects to AS level in the first year, before choosing
three to do as A-levels in the second, was also causing class size
and staffing problems at many schools in England, saidthe Secondary
Heads Association.
Although the Government said it had given local authorities an
extra pounds 35 million this year to help pay for the changes, sixth
form class sizes had risen to 29 in some cases, said SHA general
secretary John Dunford.
