MIDLAND commuters were facing long delays today as a salvage operation continued to clear the scene of a mail train crash.

Crowds gathered on the bridge overlooking the scene near Bristol city centre despite pouring rain to watch two cranes lift the remains of a Royal Mail train from a line of battered coal trucks.

The salvage operation is disrupting rail services across the West Country as the crash happened on the mainline from Bristol to Birmingham and South Wales.

The wrecked rolling stock has been cleared and work is now beginning on the track at Lawrence Hill station.
