IT WAS Thursday February 16 1835, and it seemed as if every
Brummie had made their way to the historic heart of the town. Down
High Street they came and up Digbeth they traipsed.
And all with one aim - they wanted to gaze in awe at the new
Market Hall. The crowds were as great the next day and again on the
Saturday, swelled as they were by the country folk from outlying
villages and hamlets.
Rich and poor, old or young, it mattered not a jot. All were
united in their praise of this spectacular building which was the
pride of the Bull Ring.
Little wonder that it drew such notice, for it was the newest,
biggest and most impressive public structure in the whole of
Birmingham.
