The stewardess on guard outside the Concorde lounge frowned as she
took the boarding card from my outstretched hand. Oh no. Had she
spotted I was a fraud in my faux-smart clothes from George d'Asda? A
moment later, her face relaxed. "Miss Simon, I didn't recognise you."
(Had we met?) "Your card is the wrong colour. Just ask them to change
it inside." She pushed the door open and I was in - the latest in a
long and privileged line of people clutching a golden ticket (or grey
boarding card), about to fly at twice the speed of sound. Little did
I know I would be one of the last.
The future is past; the age of supersonic travel is over. It seems
