THE future of a Black Country boxing club that produced European
and British champion Pat Cowdell was hanging in the balance today
after officials were told to quit their base after more than 63
years.
Warley Amateur Boxing Club volunteers were left devastated when
their ring at Warley Health and Fitness Centre in Abbey Road,
Smethwick, was torn down at the weekend.
Club officials have also been told that coaching and training
must stop by the end of next month.
Brian Loveridge, who leases the building at the rear of the
Pheasant Inn from owners Punch Taverns, said today that the ring was
no longer safe and he needed the room for health and fitness
equipment.
