Hands up, I'm a car snob. Yes, I've read all about how much added value you get from Far East manufacturers, but I just can't help it. For me, driving a Toyota is like turning up at school wearing a pair of Nicks instead of Nikes.

So I was surprised to find myself impressed by the new Toyota Avensis at first sight: a large, solid, silver family saloon with sleek, sporty windows and an interior dressed in black with clear, no- nonsense controls on the dashboard. The boot was so huge that I couldn't quite see its full extent in the dim light of the office car park. The rear seats, too, offered plenty of leg-room.
