IT is an image we all remember - being lined up so the 'nit
nurse' could have a poke about in our hair to make sure we were
clear. And we all know the relief when we were told we were fine.
But head lice is a constantly occurring problem. We could be
clear in the morning but have a rapidly growing colony on our heads
by that afternoon.
At any one time there will be thousands of children and adults in
the UK carrying them.
The old idea of a 'nit nurse' has now been largely replaced by
nurses working in an educative role, talking to parents about the
best ways of detecting and treating head lice.
These nurses have worked hard to end the stigma which surrounds
