IT is an image we all remember - being lined up so the 'nit nurse' could have a poke about in our hair to make sure we were clear. And we all know the relief when we were told we were fine.

But head lice is a constantly occurring problem. We could be clear in the morning but have a rapidly growing colony on our heads by that afternoon.

At any one time there will be thousands of children and adults in the UK carrying them.

The old idea of a 'nit nurse' has now been largely replaced by nurses working in an educative role, talking to parents about the best ways of detecting and treating head lice.
