Article: No quarter given for Carriers over historic pub's electric sign

A PUB reputed to be the oldest in Leith has fallen foul of planners - after one complaint about its light-up sign.

The historic Carriers Quarters had an electrically-lit sign outside its porch in the 1970s - so when manager George Seaton took over last year he restored it.

Now planning chiefs have decided the sign is not in keeping with the rest of the pub and have demanded it is replaced by metal lettering. Mr Seaton said: "At the moment there are two wooden boards with the pub's name on them and the box sign that lights up. It's all done in the best possible taste. "But why is there suddenly a problem?
