MENTALLY ill offenders are to move from Carstairs State Hospital
to a new secure psychiatric unit in Edinburgh within months.
It was confirmed today that a new "medium-secure" unit will open
in April at the Royal Edinburgh Hospital in Morningside.
The new unit, which will cover south-east Scotland, will house
patients who no longer need the top level of security provided at
Carstairs.
Lothian Primary Care Trust, which runs the hospital, today
confirmed patients who have committed offences because of their
illness could be eligible for transfer.
The Government expressed a commitment earlier this year to
providing alternatives for patients at Carstairs who do not need to
be in a high-security ...
