TONY BLAIR today hailed the "historic" handover of power to the
new devolved government of Northern Ireland.
The Prime Minister said there was "still a long journey to
travel" with many obstacles ahead, but now there was a real chance
for peace in the province.
"There is at least the hope that the hand of history is at last
lifting the burden of terror and violence and shaping the future of
the people of Northern Ireland and, in particular, the children," he
said.
Mr Blair said devolution, which happened formally at midnight,
meant unionists, nationalists, Protestants and Catholics, loyalists
and republicans, were now working together, making decisions
