Article: Calton Hill going up in the world with revamp

NEW moves to revamp Edinburgh's Calton Hill were launched today - but council chiefs promised they would not make the same mistakes as last time.

Two years ago Edinburgh City Council was forced into a humiliating climbdown over plans for lasers and a glass pavilion on the famous landmark, which also houses an observatory.

But today council leader Keith Geddes said: "We have learned our lesson from the previous experience.

"We're not going to go for a Disneyland on Calton Hill."

The council has won a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund to help pay for a conservation plan for the hill - and the move is being backed by conservationists and local residents.
