ITS roots were put down at the end of the 19th century, when woodflour was needed in vast quantities to supply the burgeoning linoleum industry.

And at its peak, the Edinburgh factory operated round the clock, four men each toiling at the machinery for 12 hours at a time to ensure the factories had a decent stock of raw material.

Now another slice of the city's industrial heritage is to be consigned to the history books with the news that Scotland's last surviving woodflour mill is to close.

The mill in Dunedin Street - set up to supply the booming linoleum industry across the Forth in Fife - had grown from a timber company set up by Robert Lamb in 1889.
